Review of Pratisphere, The coolest Ice Sphere Mold!

This review is from: Ice Sphere Molds & Ice Ball Maker - Set of 4 Ice Cube Trays - Create Whiskey Ice Balls and Round Ice Cubes That Won't Water Down Your Scotch, Bourbon, Cocktails, & Other Drinks by Pratico Kitchen

Overall, this #Pratisphere is a great product and the sphere it produces is beautiful. I know that’s a weird adjective for an ice cube, BUT, the center of it had these beautiful air bubbles and ‘legs’ that were really beautiful. The point of a sphere, over cubes, is of course a colder drink with less of the watered-down taste. The reason is simple – there’s less surface area in one sphere compared to many ice cubes. Plus, it tends to melt slower due to its density and the temperature it maintains, so this also contributes to the chill without tons of water. It’s perfect for use in whisky, bourbon, or really any drink – alcoholic or note.

Now, the dishwasher-safe aspect is a huge selling point. I personally won't buy anything (if I can help it) that is not dishwasher safe. With that being said, for a full clean, the purple top needs to be placed dome-down. However, each of my four tops came out distorted. They melted a bit where they sat on the wire grid that is the top shelf leaving dents instead of their original crisp edge. Additionally, the base would benefit from holes being drilled about midway (sides only, to not disturb the dome) so that they can drain during this (or even hand-washing). Instead, you're left with wet nasty mess (with food particles usually) that have to be dumped out. See my photos - note I washed them flipped the other way (which is required to get a full clean of the primary surface), but flipped them for the photo. The underside of the cup filled with water, which simply required me to dump, rinse and fully dry before use. Simple drain holes in the side above the sphere-part of the mold would alleviate this.

Now as for the product itself (the intent – those glorious ice spheres), it’s great. Easy to fill, freeze and extract the ice. You are left with a really attractive (and fancy-looking) ice sphere that can be used in any drink (alcoholic or not). If you’re feeling really Martha-Stewarty, you could fill it with lemonade and fruit for a fancy sphere.

Overall, great product – truly it is. I was just disappointed that it’s marketed as dishwasher safe, yet the purple edges melted and permanently warped where they sat on the shelf/rack in the dishwasher. Do I recommend this, absolutely! I just might recommend hand-washing instead. Note, I used these for water/ice cubes to use in Bourbon and whisky. As such, there’s not really a need to dishwasher-clean them if you’re JUST putting water in them. Fruits and juices, sure you’ll need to clean thoroughly. However, when I opened the package it smelled chemically and plastic-like, this is why I dishwasher cleaned them before use.
